A. Personal History

Though born to the Genii elite and thus blessed with the relative safety and comfort of life in their underground bunkers, Ladon's was not a happy childhood. Small, slender, and bookish in a highly-militarized culture that valued martial prowess, he was often bullied by bigger kids. His parents declined to intervene, his father especially feeling that it would 'make a man out of him.' And, while his sister Dahlia sympathized, anything she could have done would only have made matters worse, making it seem as if he was 'hiding behind her skirts.'

Ladon survived by discovering that physical strength isn't everything. By the time he was ten, he was regularly outsmarting his would-be tormenters and by fifteen he was creating ingenious impromptu weapons to strike back at them. This did not go unnoticed by the adults around him (who fostered the dog-eat-dog atmosphere in part for that very purpose) and he was singled out for advanced education.

His mandatory military service temporarily deferred, Ladon went to the Genii equivalent of university. Excelling there, he graduated with several advanced degrees and entered the service with the exalted status of military scientist. Here he again excelled, devising new weapons and valuable improvements to old ones. This didn't endear him to some of his older, less-gifted colleagues, and he found himself facing bullying again, only of a different, more sophisticated sort. Refusing again to knuckle under, he mastered this different sort of war, developing a devious and subtle mind hidden behind his boyishly innocent features.

Ladon was just past thirty when one of his inventions brought him to the attention of Cowen, leader of the Genii. Knowing talent when he saw it and wanting it for his own side, he became Ladon's sponsor, offering protection and advancement in exchange for loyalty. Though he privately regarded Cowen as nothing more than the most capable thug of the lot, Ladon was bitterly aware that the way Genii politics worked he would have to attach himself to one of them, so it might as well be the top dog. It certainly wasn't going to be a nutter like Acastus Kolya.

Subsequently appointed Chief Scientist, Ladon has since outwardly been the model of trustworthiness and reliability. This is helped by the fact that he and Cowen both want to destroy the Wraith and return the Genii to their former hegemonic status. And, thus far, they've largely been in agreement as to the means to that end. However, were that to change ...

B. General Personality

Ladon is a little guy in a big-guy culture and has fought his way up with his wits. Though he's not innately cruel, he has no concept of mercy or compassion for their own sake, having never really experienced them. To him, the weak are prey and the only way to stop being prey is to become powerful, so he will make the Genii powerful by any means necessary.

While pragmatic even to the point of ruthlessness, he's not capricious or stupid and will keep his promises if he judges it's in his people's interest. It's a simple risk-reward calculation, concepts like 'honor' and 'morality' don't enter into it.

To the extent that he’s capable of such an emotion, Ladon loves his sister Dahlia. That makes him vulnerable, so he hides it as much as he can, even from himself. He will go to great lengths to protect her and will repay tenfold any kindness (or cruelty) shown her.

i. Character Strengths:

While not quite on a level with geniuses like McKay, Zelenka, or Carter, Ladon is extremely smart and well-educated (within the constraints of Genii knowledge). He's a polymath with a logical, scientific mind and can figure out fairly advanced equipment and concepts given a little time.

He's also extremely politically savvy and can be quite charming when he chooses.

ii. Character Weaknesses:

Ladon’s greatest weakness is his sister, Dahlia, whom he loves and tries his best to protect. While he won’t sacrifice himself or the Genii for her, he’ll take risks and make concessions that he otherwise would never consider.

Ladon also doesn’t really understand simple kindnesses or doing things because they’re the right thing to do. He continually looks for ulterior motives, even when they’re not there.

For a Genii, Ladon isn’t especially good at hand-to-hand combat and his small size and light build put him at a considerable disadvantage against most opponents.

iii. Personal attitude and demeanour:

Outwardly, Ladon is a polite, easygoing, harmless guy (especially when compared with the general run of militant aggressiveness among the Genii). It's even mostly true ... except for the harmless part. He doesn't care who figures to be the BSD in the room, he doesn't go looking for fights, and he doesn't bluster or threaten, but he won't hesitate to neutralize (or annihilate) anyone or anything if he feels it necessary.

C. Additional Information

Some of the Genii culture is headcanon extrapolated from what was shown in the series, but I tried to keep it logical and to a minimum.

Ancient gene: No

RP Sample (in character):

OOC: This came from a story seed of 'vampire demon teddy bears.'

Ladon sprinted down one of Atlantis' seemingly numberless corridors, caught a strut to make a corner without losing much speed, then raced down that hallway. His breath was coming short and his heart was pounding so loudly it almost drowned out the patter of footsteps behind him.

Patter of paw steps? he wondered wildly. The creatures in pursuit were small, pudgy, fuzzy animals. They looked almost like toys and they'd be downright cuddly if it weren't for the blazing red eyes and mouths full of sharp, pointy teeth. Teeth they were more than willing to use, the Genii man had seen, shuddering even at the memory of a New Lantean who'd made the mistake of tripping and falling in the path of that vicious, furry tide.

And speaking of the New Lanteans, where the hell were they? Where were Sheppard and Lorne? Or Carter? Or even the obnoxious and hostile Ronon? They'd certainly put up a stiff enough resistance when it had been the Genii invading their city. He couldn't see them just lying down and taking this.

As if in answer to his unspoken query, the rattle of automatic weapon fire came from somewhere up ahead. Finally, Ladon thought, pushing his pace even faster.
